ChinaTravelNews – Global hotel giant Hilton is expanding in unprecedented haste in China in the face of the relentless advance of Marriott Group in the greater China region.
Hilton plans to open 11 hotels in the Chengdu area
Hilton is making a second round of large-scale expansion in China following the first move in 2010. The group has 180 hotels currently under construction in China, about three times the current portfolio of 62 hotels in China out of 64 in total in greater China as of September 30 2015. In Chengdu alone, there are 11 Hilton hotels under construction, and those in Yunnan and Urumqi have been completed, a clear sign that the hotel group is taking a stronghold in western China.
In the US Hotels magazine’s 2014 annual hotel ranking, Hilton Worldwide ranked first in terms of room and hotel counts. In the third quarter of this year, Hilton Group added 91 properties globally with 13,000 hotel rooms, 25% of the new additions were rebranded properties.
China has already become the second most important market for Hilton Worldwide after the US. It operates five hotel brands in China and has won the management franchise for two brands by local developers. In the upcoming year, it will add two more luxury hotels to its portfolio in China, including the Chengdu Waldorf Astoria and the Guangzhou Conrad Hotel. (Translation by David)
